NEW ENGLAND THEATRE CONFERENCE
Session 4: 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Playing it Forward: Using Playback Theatre to Explore, Nourish and Empower the Creative Life and Risk Taking of Theatre Artists in a Changing World
Theatre artists - whether playwrights, actors, directors, producers, designers or educators - share the desire to express themselves creatively while bringing dynamic and meaningful theatrical experiences to audiences. From inspiration to execution, they share the challenges and joys of pursuing a creative life, often with little support, and on a rapidly changing world stage. Through the unique power of Playback Theatre, this workshop will create an opportunity for theatre artists to explore the challenges and satisfactions of taking on creative projects, collaborating, risking, sustaining inspiration and vision, making mistakes, forging new beginnings, discovering hidden strengths, and breathing new life into fading dreams. This highly participatory workshop will begin with warm-ups to identify specific strengths and challenges facing the participants. Then, Kelly & Nancy will elicit stories, focusing on strategies for pursuing one's creative journey, which will be enacted by the Boston Playback Company.
Facilitated by:
Kelly DuMar, Playwright, Psychodramatist, Founder and Co-Producer of the Annual Our Voices Festival of Boston Area Women Playwrights, now in its 7th year
Nancy Capaccio, Conductor and Program Designer, Boston Playback Company
Playback Theatre Actors, Boston Playback Company

I'm looking forward to taking part in my fourth Culture Park Short Play Festival in New Bedford on Nov. 24, 2012, when my short play, Wish, will have a staged reading with 27 other selected plays at the Whaling Museum Theatre, 18 Johnny Cake Hill in downtown New Bedford.
Wish had its first public reading at the 6th Annual Our Voices Festival earlier this year and has since been revised.
ABOUT WISH: Starling, an incest survivor, visits her estranged father in a nursing home to confront him about fathering the biological child she gave up for adoption.
Schedule of plays will be announced soon. This is a great festival with audience discussion with the playwrights. Looking forward to being there!

Kelly's prose poem, Singing Over Your Bones, based on her performance poem, was published in August, 2012, by Lingerpost, a literary journal. Singing Over Your Bones was performed at the Our Voices Festival of Boston Area Women Playwrights and the Culture Park Short Play Marathon, New Bedford, MA.
Lingerpost is a biannual online journal that seeks to publish the best new poetry by established and emerging artists.
Lingerpost: Work that exists somewhere between crossroad fingerposts directing travelers and the idea that poetry, as Emily Dickinson said, lingers and “makes [the] whole body so cold no fire can ever warm [it].”
Lingerpost: What compels us is a desire to enter another heart and imagination, to know—to penetrate, whatever the instrument, the walls that hold those same hearts and thoughts separate and closed. To know and be known.

Kelly DuMar's one act play for youth, The Adventures of Rocky & Skye, will be performed by Cameron Middle School at the upcoming Mass. Educational Theatre Guild Drama Festival, April 28, 2012, in Lynnfield, MA, directed by Maura Kate Moore.
About The Adventures of Rocky & Skye:
Comedy. 2-16 males, 2-21 females (4-37 performers total). 30-35 minutes. Suitable for all ages. The play may be performed equally effectively by age-appropriate actors (varying by scene from elementary through middle school age), or by older (high school, college or adult) actors. It is also ideal for scene study and classroom use, and individual scenes and monologues are well-suited for competition. Professional rights should be negotiated directly with YouthPLAYS at [email protected].
The Adventures of Rocky & Skye premiered at Summer Shorts 4: Celebration, produced by Youth Education on Stage (Williston, ND), where it won second place. "Cloud Jumping" and "The Baby Artists" (scenes in the play) will be published in the Smith & Kraus anthology Winners Competition Series Vol. 2: Award-Winning 90-Second Comic Scenes Ages 4-12 (ed. Janet Milstein).

Through a series of short, fast-paced scenes, a quartet of characters grow up before the audience's eyes, as we witness the friendship, fun and social skirmishes Rocky, Skye, Ratani and Grant, encounter on their journey from kindergarten through middle school. Whether they’re debating whose father can reach the moon first, kissing and telling, picturing unlikely future careers, double dating or waiting for the last bell of middle school to ring, these charming characters inspire us to laugh and appreciate the extraordinary moments of ordinary life.
